Hanover County: October 23, 1778: Sundry parishioners of the Parish
of St. Paul in Hanover County request that their vestry be dissolved
and that an act be passed to limit the term of office of vertrymen.
Their vestry had been appointed under former government and had not
been elected by parishioners themselves. The petitioners state that
they want a more democratic system of operating the church. For
instance, their present vestrymen brought in a rector of their own
choice and the parishioners had no voice in the matter even though
they were the ones who were responsible for raising the money for his
salary. Signatures are: Joel Melton, Henry Wade, Gideon Wade, James
Martin, Ambrose White, Samuel White, Jeremiah Wade, Thomas White.
