- I am making the assumption that this ancestor was named Barnabas. His
name might have been Arthur. One of his sons was named Barnaba and
another named Arthur. Both of these names were carried through the
family down to the present. In Ireland there was a traditional method
for naming children, which was called "patromymic". The first names
alternated. Example: Grandfather, Patrick, had a first son whom he
named for his father, Gerald. Gerald's first son would be named
Patrick. Patrick's first son would be named Gerald, etc. I chose
Barnabas because I had found a Barnabas Powers in Richmond Co., NC in
the 1795 Early Census Index.
