272 | Attended Auburn University in Auburn, AL for 1 quarter in Mechanical Engineering. Then received an appointment for Kingspoint U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kingspoint L. I., NY, as well as one from Anapolis, the U.S. Naval Academy. He accepted the appointment at Kingspoint , entered as a cadet and he graduated from there in 1957. He entered the Navy as Lt. (jg) Operations Officer on a Mine Sweeper, the USS Exploit, MSO 440. Occupation: Mechanical Engineer and Inventor for Marshall Space Flight Agency, Huntsville, AL From 1959 to 1969. Federal Electric as Systems Safety Analysis Manager for the Pentagon. " I went to Auburn for a quarter, in the NROTC. Meanwhile, I was waiting for appointments to either Annapolis Naval Academy, or to Kings Point, Merchant Marine Academy. I received appointments to both, and chose Kings Point. Kings Point had a program where the entire sophomore year was spent in training on many different ships, whereas Annapolis only spent a quarter/year on one ship. This way, I traveled around the world on many different ships. Naturally, we did not have summer breaks the other three years to get the heavy curriculum completed.I was graduated in 1957 from Kings Point with a Mechanical Engineering degree, a commission of Ensign in the Navy, and an Engineers license for the Merchant Marine. This was in Long Island, NY. I sailed on my license as an engineer on a passenger-cargo ship from New Orleans, LA to Europe. After one year, I was called into active duty in the Navy, stationed in Charleston, SC and Panama City, FL. I was assigned as the Operations Officer on an Ocean going MINE SWEEPER. That was a wonderful time for me also (1957-1959). We went on maneuvers off the coast of Florida until we were called to duty in the Mediterranean Sea, with the home port of Athens, Greece. Loved it. Never saw any action, since only the Lebanon crises was happening. I missed the Korean war (thankfully) with exemptions of being at the Academy; and, Viet Nam with exemptions for the moon landing program. When I returned home after my tour of duty in the Navy in 1959, my Dad had a job possibility for me at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL. I checked it out and was hired as an engineer assigned to the Arsenal. The Army was developing the Redstone Rocket that was used for the early low altitude space flights with the monkeys, and later the Mercury Redstone program for the Astronauts. Then, NASA took over the Arsenal and it became Marshall Space Flight Center, as you know. I loved this period of time, too. President Kennedy made his famous announcement of a man on the moon, AND BACK SAFELY, this decade. I worked in the Quality & Reliability Engineering Program, with many of the German scientists, testing the systems of the emerging Saturn Flight Vehicle that eventually sent the men to the moon, and back, SAFELY, in the Apollo program. In the latter part of 1968, I started to venture into inner space, as did so many of us after the successful moon landing. This is where I met my teacher, a magnificent woman teaching the Path of the Masters. She had been working for NASA as Administrative Assistant to Werner Von Braun, and left that life to concentrate on the inner (self) work. We developed a group of people who had the same drive in those days." 278 | Capt. William Ball, II, b. in England, 2d Jan. 1641; d. in Lancaster Co., Va., 30th Sept. 1694. In 1687 Capt. William BALL was appointed to lay off the boundary between Lancaster and Northumberland Cos., Va.; was a Justice in 1680 and Burgess 1685; m. prob. three times, (firstly) prob. Margaret or Mary Williamson, dau. of James Williamson; (secondly) Miss Hanes of ?Bay View,? Northumberland Co., Va.; m. (thirdly) circa 1675 Margaret Downman, dau. of Rawleigh Downman. He was a son of Col. William Ball, of Lancaster and his wife, Hannah Atherold. He was born in England, June 2, 1641. He was burgess from Lancaster county in the sessions of Sept. 17, 1668, Oct. 3, 1670, Sept. 21, 1674, in the assemblies of 1677, 1682, 1685-86 and 1688, and in the sessions of April 1, 1692. In 1687 Capt. William Ball, of Lancaster, was appointed to lay off the boundary between Lancaster and Northumberland counties. He was justice in 1680. He married (first) Mary Williamson, daughter of Dr. James Williamson, of Rappahannock, to whom John Hammond dedicated his tract "Leah and Rachel;" (secondly) Miss Harris, of "Bay View," Northumberland county; (thirdly) in 1675. Margaret Downman, daughter of Rawleigh Downman. Capt. Ball died in Lancaster county, Sept. 30, 1694. His will was dated Sept. 28, 1694, and probated Nov. 4, 1694. Children of Captain William Ball (1641) and Mary Harris: 1. William Ball (1676) m. Hannah Beale 2. Richard Ball (1676) m. Sarah Young 3. Major James Ball (1678) m. 1st- Elizabeth Hawson and 2nd- Mary Dangerfield, 4. Joseph Ball (1680) m. Mary Johnston 5. George Ball (1683) m. Grace Waddy 6. Samuel (1686) m. Ann Taylor 7. David Ball (1686) m. Ellen Heale 8. Stretchley Ball (died young) 9. Margaret Ball m. Rawleigh Downman Capt. William Ball and his wife Margaret Williamson had a daughter, Margaret Ball who married Rawleigh Downman. When Rawleigh Downman died Margaret became involved with Rawleigh Chinn. Its hard to tell from the timing but this may have been one of several affairs that Rawleigh Chinn had. Rawleigh's first marriage to Joseph Ball's daughter Esther collapsed and Rawleigh has three illegitimite children with Margaret Ball Downman, Esther's first cousin according to the researchers of the Ball Library. [Ball Library. 12/1/02] 1740- 1743 List of Vestrymen in St. Mary's Parish, before the union of the parishes, from 1739 to 1756, and of both parishes after the union. by David Ball. (minister) William Bertrand, William Ball, Jr., Joseph Ball, Joseph Heale, Jos. Chinn, Martin Shearman, Raleigh Chinn, Richard Chichester, Jesse Ball, Robert Mitchell, Colonel Ball, Major Ball, (making five Balls in one vestry,) Joseph Carter, Thomas Chinn. In the year 1743, the following vestrymen from Christ Church met with the vestry of St. Mary's White Chapel,--viz.: Henry Carter, Henry Lawson, Mr. Edwards, Mr. Steptoe, Mr. Martin, Captain Tayloe, Colonel Conway, Thomas Lawson, John Steptoe, Mr. Pinkard. At this time six of each vestry are appointed to form a general vestry, and it is sometimes difficult to determine to which parish each one belongs. Hugh Bent, from Christ Church, James Ball, Jr., Dale Carter, Stephen Towles, George Payne, Merryman Payne, Richard Selden, Thomas Chinn, Solomon Ewell, John Fleet, William Dymer, Charles Carter, John Chinn, James Kiok, Thaddeus McCarty, Thomas Griffin, Thomas Lawson, Edwin Conway, William Montague, in place of Charles Carter, in 1776, Henry Towles, James Newby, William Sydnor, John Berryman, Colonel John Tayloe, James Brent, William Chewning, James Ball, Jr.. In 1786, Cyrus Griffin is appointed to attend the Episcopal Convention in Richmond, and James Ball to attend the examination of the Rev. Edward Jones at the court-house. For what purpose and of what character that examination was, is not certainly known, but it is believed to have been a kind of trial under a canon of Virginia. Thus ends the vestry-book. [Mead. "Old Church Records of Virginia." Vol. 1 -2. Vol 2 online by Walker, Ruth. "Old Church Records of Virginia." part 2. [http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?ball::va::13769.html] A History of the Ball family from a Downman MS: On this document: . . . William Ball, son of a London attorney, came to America in 1657. He was a “mature man” who ‘transported” his wife, two children, and a number of servants, free or indentured. (The children were born in Devonshire, England.) There are no references in Virginia Records prior to 1657; however, in that year he was listed among the Justices of Lancaster county. (Hayden said he migrated in 1651, aged 36, but Joseph II in his “letter-book” gives the date as 1657, age 42. Probably the 7 was mistaken for a 1.) If family records are accurate, William Ball was the son of William Ball of Lincoln’s Inn, one of the four attorneys of the Office of pleas and Exchequer. He married Hannah Atherold and she was manifestly a person of honor in the traditions of the family, judging by the interest taken in her by her grandson, Joseph II. She died in 1694. Hannah (Atherold) Ball and William Ball had at least four children. He died about 1697. He was estranged from his daughter, Hannah, who had married David Fox. In his will he left her “5 shillings sterling, which. . .is an overplus of her portion or deserts.” He took precautions to keep her mother from leaving her any part of estate but did not altogether succeed. When Hannah (Atherold) Ball died in 1694, she bequeathed to her “loveing daughter Hannah Fox, wife of David Fox, a suite of red curtains, valens and counterpane and bolster, a pewter cistern to set bottles in, a pewter custard pan, a cabinet that stands next the kitchen, a silver sugar dish, mustard pot, three spoons, a silver trencher.” She also tried to leave the “negro and the mulatto girl given me by my husband to dispose of as I please.” Whether this attempt to leave the two slaves to Hannah succeeded isn’t known, or whether the will was admitted to probate. All these four children had been born in the “home country” (Devonshie, England). After William Ball came to Virginia, he settled on a neck of land he called “Millenbeck” at the mouth of Corotoman Creek, Lancaster County, and thee he improved his fortune as a polaner and trader. He acquired more lands. In 1677 he was Major of the county Militia. Two or more times, he was Burgess. He was active in the defense of Lancaster against the Indians. He conferred and lay down a levy on the Norther Neck for the exenses of supressing the uprising. He was in the company of his peers and took active part in all county affairs. His son William settled in Philadelphia where he died in 1740. (Source: Thelma Roush-Rootsweb Post 10 May 2001. | Ball, William II (I6392)

In 1652 he along with 149 other prisoners appeared in the province of Maryland." From Colonial Families of the United States, by George Norbury Mackinsie (Vol. 11, page 66) "Ninian Beall was born in Largo, Fifeshire, Scotland, in 1625. He held a commission as cornet in the Scotch-English Army, raised to resist Cromwell. He fought in the battle of Dunbar, September 3, 1650 against Cromwell. He was made prisoner oat that battle and sentenced to five years servitude. He was sent with 150 other Scotchmen to Barbadoes, West Indies. About 1652 they appeared in the Province of Maryland. Ninian Beall served his five years with Richard Hall, planter of Calvert County. It seems that these military prisoners were entitled to acres of public land after completing service." In Liber II, folio 195 - Maryland Land Office, is the following: "16 Janurary 1677 - Then came Ninian Beall of Calvert County, planter, and proved his right to 50 acres of land for his time service performed with Richard Hall of same County. This servitude which came to him not on account of crime but through fortunes of war, was an honor. Ninian Beall's military ability in the Scotch-English Army seems to have been made good use of the Province of Maryland, as shown by the following notations: 1688, records of Annapolis, dated 31 October call him Lieutenant Ninian Beall. 1676, commissioned Lieutenant of Lord Baltimore's yacht of war Loal Charles of Maryland, John Goade, commander. 1684, Deputy Surveyor of Charles County. 1688, Chief Military Officer of Calvert County. 1692, High Sheriff of Calvert County. 1694, Colonel of Militis, by the Assembly, 30 July 1694. 1697, on a commission to trat with the Indians. 1697-1701, member of the General Assembly. 1699, the General Assembly passed an "Act of Gratitude for the distinguished Indian services of the Colonel Ninian Beall. His signatures to official papers are bold and free. As he signed his will (January 1717) by witnessed mark, it would indicate he must have been in very feeble condition of body at the time; he was then ninety-two years old. He seems to have identified himself with the Presbyterian Church in 1690. During that year 200 Presbyterian emigrants came over from Scotland under his supervision. He located them along the Potomic River and called the settlement New Scotland. These emigrants brought with them Rev. Nathaniel Taylor, who received a deed of gift from Col. Ninian Beall on land in upper Marlboro, upon which to build a church. In 1707 Col. Ninian Beall presented the church a costly silver communion set made in London (a portion of this set is now in the Presbyterian Church at Hyattsville, MD." | Beall, Col. Ninian (I11105)

285 | Daniel Crenshaw and Nathaniel Crenshaw, Revolutionary War Patriots at Valley Forge: Daniel Crenshaw and his brother Nathaniel were drafted Feb. (between 10th and 17th)1778. Served at Valley Forge under Capt. Nicholas Hobson's County of 6th Virginia Reg., later commanded by Lt. John Bell after Capt. Hobson's resignation. Daniel Crenshaw also served in 2nd Virginia. Reg. See Bell: The Old Free State, ppl 233 234, also p. 224.From DAR Review:Also Capts. Hockaday, Taliferro, Cols. Gibson, FebigerPatriot # A027732 (Basis for Elaine's DAR initial application) Daniel was born circa 1760 in Lunenberg County, Virginia, British Colony.1. He was the son of Cornelius Crenshaw and Martitia Winn. Daniel was married to Nancy Dupree, daughter of Joseph Dupree , II and Nannie Sullivan, circa 1781 in Lunenberg County, Virginia. He married 2nd to Nancy Jennings, daughter of James Joshua Jennings and Philadelphia Bruce. Daniel Crenshaw was a Private in the Revolutionary War. Served in a Company designated at various times as Captain Nicholas Hobson's and Captain John Hookaday's Company 6th Virginia Regiment commanded by Colonel John Gibson. He enlisted February 17, 1778 for one year, and was transferred in October 1778 to Captain Benjamin Talisaferro's Company, 2nd Virginia Regiment commanded by Colonel Christain Febiger. He was transferred in November 1778 to Captain John Stoke's Company, same Regimen. He was as Valley Forge as part of Washington's Army Pennsylvania on February 17, 1778. Both Daniel and his brother Nathaniel are listed on the Muster Rolls at Valley Forge and descendants are eligible for membership in the Society of the Descendants of Washington's Army at Valley Forge The brothers also found in the battle of Guilford Court House in North Carolina and Nathaniel was injured in the eye. The Will dated Wednesday, August 20, 1794 does not jive with his re-appearance in Williamson County, Tennessee. Cannot figure out how to reconcile this with his Rev. War Pension Application facts. Daniel Crenshaw in his will dated 20 Aug 1794, probated 10 Sept 1795 Lunenburg County, Virginia, gave his son Abner Crenshaw 100 acres adjoining Osborne, the Ridge Road and to include the 67 acres purchased of Robert Breedlove (Lun WB 1791-1799, P. 104. Notes: Daniel Crenshaw TN Franklin, Williamson County / Nancy Crenshaw, widow of. (This is 2nd wife Nancy Jennings) Pension suspended for further proof of service. Born the son of Cornelius & Martisha (Winn) Crenshaw, about 1760 Lunenberg VA - died 15 Sep 1831 Williamson Co TN. Married twice. First to Nancy Dupree in Virginia 1779 (daughter of Joseph Dupree and Nannie Sullivan) and she is credited as being the mother of his children William F., Christaina, Elizabeth, Abner P., and Joseph Dupree Crenshaw. His second wife is documented to be Nancy Jennings also of Lunenberg, Virginia whom he married 2 Jul 1789. Three children are listed on Nancy's widow's application which incidentally was denied because the request for additional proof was not forthcoming. The first is Cornelius born 12 May 1790 and the second born 6 Jul 1792 I have concluded is Eliza (ze or za is legible on the pension review). The third child is Polly Jennings Crenshaw born 25 Oct 1794. Other researchers have found additional children. Another Nathaniel is listed and the review of Nancy's Widow's pension states that in 1848 there is one Nathaniel Crenshaw age forty-four living in Williamson County, Tennessee. It is possible that the 3 children listed are the ones living with her in 1848 in the family home. The other children of Daniel Crenshaw and Nancy Ann Jennings are Josephus Crenshaw, Martha Patsy Crenshaw, Daniel Crenshaw (of which we will later hear much!!), and Chester Crenshaw. In 181? in Lunenburg County, Virginia, Daniel Crenshaw sold and conveyed certain slaves to Ric ard Herring, who soon after contracted for the purchase of a tract of land from DaJtiel Crenshaw, lying in the same county; but Nancy Crenshaw, the wife of Daniel, refused to relin quish her right of dower; and to induce her to do so, Herring agreed with her and her son, Cornelius Crenshaw, to convey to the latter, in trust for his mother and for her separate use, two of the slaves pre viously purchased from Daniel Crenshaw. The deed was duly executed and recorded in Lunenburg. ' In 1814 Daniel Crenshaw and his wife removed to Tennessee, carry ing the slaves with them; Cornelius, the trustee, continuing to reside in Virginia. In Tennessee; to all appearance, Daniel Crenshaw was the true owner of the slaves, and acquired credit on the faith of the property. He was improvident, for which reason, manifestly, the wife caused the slaves to be secured to herself; and it may be remarked that similar motives have led to many, not to say most, of this description of conveyances in the States where the provisions of the Act of 1785, of Virginia, prevail . In 1821 Stacy recovered a judgment against Daniel Crenshaw in the county of his residence in Tennessee, by virtue of an execution, founded upon which Anthony, the sheriff, seized upon the slaves; and Cornelius Crenshaw, as his mother's trustee, sued the sheriff in detinue. The circuit court held the deed of trust 'void, by force of the statute of Tennessee (which is very nearly a transcript of that of Virginia), because the deed had not been recorded in Tennessee; a verdict was rendered for the defendant, and the plaintiff prosecuted his writ of error to the Supreme Court, where the judgment was reversed. The court held that the deed made in Virginia, separating the title (Source: David Charles Crenshaw) Daniel Crenshaw , receipt to Langston Bacon, Jr. , Trustee for œ8:10:5: being the balance of the proceeds from a sale of sd. Mary Cooper. I have notes on an Ezekiel Alexander, and with the understanding that they are only notes, and not proven information, I hope this will help: There was an Ezekiel Alexander who was the son of another Ezekiel, whose will was written in Mecklenburg Co. Aug. 22, 1810, and probated January of 1811. He names wife, Martha, and the following children: (1) Sarah [I have a note that she married Richard Robison, who died in 1797]; (2) James Taylor Alexander; (3) Deborah Robison [I have a note that she married Robert Robison, who also died in 1797]; (4) Ezekiel Alexander [I have a note that he "may" have married Patsey Robison on 3-8-1806]; (5) Wallace Alexander. In addition, Ezekiel, Sr. named a grandson, Ezekiel Robison, and my notes say he was a son of Robert & Deborah Alexander Robison. Executors of the will were son, Ezekiel Alexander, grandson Ezekiel Robison, and "friend" James Alexander. Witnessed by Ezekiel Robison & Ezra Alexander. I can't be of much assurance that the younger Ezekiel named in this will is your Ezekiel who moved to Tennessee, however: I also have notes that an Ezekiel whose will was probated in Mecklenburg in January of 1837 was "probably Ezekiel Sr's son". This one names wife, Nancy, sons Rufus, Joel, Ezekiel Wallace Alexander, and grandson Thomas. H. Alexander. This Ezekiel was a resident of the Sugar Creek vicinity of Mecklenburg. There were numerous Ezekiel Alexanders in Mecklenburg, and sorting them out can be confusing. If you are certain that your Ezekiel is the one that married Patsey Robison, then you can rule out the one who died here in 1836/1837. The first Ezekiel I mentioned might be a more likely candidate, since the family ties to the Robisons are very evident. Not much but guesswork, but I hope it may hold a clue for you. 288 | Descendants of John Gray I Generation No. 1 1. JOHN1 GRAY I was born Abt. 1685 in County Ulster, Northern Ireland, and died 21 Nov 1751 in Timber Ridge, Augusta Co., Virginia. He married AGNESS?. She was born Abt. 1695 in County Ulster, Northern Ireland, and died Abt. 1759 in Augusta Co., Virginia. Notes for JOHN GRAY I: John Gray and his wife Agnes were probably among those families who came to Virginia with Benjamin Borden in 1737 although a deed for the property where they lived was not drawn until 6 July 1742, at which time John Gray bought 203 acres of the Borden tract, the deeds of lease and release being dated July 26. Deeds of lease and release were common ways of conveying property in England and were in use in this country during the Colonial period, the deed of lease being dated one day prior to the deed of release, and in effect acting as a single conveyance. The land lay "in Orange County on the waters of James River, being part of the said Benjamin Borden's large tract of 92,100 acres of Patin land., dated the sixth day of November of 1739, which Tract contains 203 acres and two Roods of Land, situated on the Northwest side of the Timber Ridge in Orange County, beginning at a Double Poplar on the said Ridge and running thence North 50 degrees west 185 poles to a small poplar, thence north 40 degrees east 176 poles to a Spanish oak on the side of the aforesaid Ridge, thence along the said Ridge south 40 degrees west 176 poles to the Beginning. The consideration named was Pound 6:2:1. The deed was recorded 26 August 1742. The first grants were issued on surveys made by James Wood of Orange County. It is indicative of the uncertainty regarding county lines that this deed was recorded in the Court House of Orange County, for the land covered by the deed was certainly in the new county of Augusta, although the deed speaks of it as Orange County, and it was recorded there. According to Lippincott's Gazeteer, Timber Ridge was a post-village of Rockbridge County, seven miles NE of Lexington, Rockbridge County was formed from Augusta and Botetourt Counties in 1778, and Timber Ridge fell in the section that became Rockbridge County. It is believed that John Gray and wife, Agnes migrated from England to Virginia between 1737 and 1742. John bought 203 acres along the James River in the Timber Ridge area. In 1746, the settlers at Timber Ridge built a log cabin to be used as a Presbyterian church. A list has been preserved of the men commissioning the first pastor in 1753. On the list appears the names: Samuel Gray, Jacob Gray, and William Gray. These were sons of John and Agnes. John Gray's will is dated April 23,1751 and lists as his heirs: Wife, Agnes, and children: Jacob, William, David, Joseph, Benjamin, Ann, Samuel, John, and Elizabeth. William was appointed guardian over Benjamin who was still a minor. After John's death, Agnes and children moved to NC. John Gray and his son Samuel were among the inhabitants of the Virginia frontier who in 1742 petitioned Royal Governor William Gooch to appoint officers to raise militia for defense of the frontier settlements against Indians raids. The lands of John and Samuel Gray were located in what was known as the Borden Tract and on the northwest side of the Timber Ridge in present Rockbridge County (named for the Natural Bridge, which is one of Virginia’s most noted scenic attractions and which lies in Rockbridge County). The nearby town of Lexington became a center of education under the influence of those early Ulster Scots Presbyterians who populated the area. (Source: familygenes.net/gray.htm) This land is located in present day Rockbridge County north of Lexington between Brownsburg and Fairfield, Virginia. This Borden Grant was adjacent and to the south of Beverly Manor, Borden Grant and Beverly Manor are located in present day Rockbridge and Augusta Counties. It is nothing more than two little tidbits about Grandpa that I got from a “snippet view” of two sources in Google Books. The second one takes a little while to show up. Sadly, I never was able to find the whole thing, in either case, but they offer a tantalizing clue to why Grandpa left the Presbyterian church. It does seem to fit mother’s explanation somewhat that they disapproved of his starting a soup kitchen during the Depression, which drew “riff-raff” into the church. Margaret Colliers’ explanation was that he preached an unpopular sermon again the establishing of the Community Chest because he felt that the Churches were relinquishing their role of caring for the poor. Perhaps that’s what is meant by differences “over the application” or “exemplification of the social gospel.” Interesting. I’ve attached the “snippets.” Love, Sheri Rev. Scofield of Douglaston Park (sic) and Rev. John Baumeister of Flushing officiated at the first Lord's Supper on October 31, 1915. In November of that year, Rev. Scofield volunteered to preach until a regular preacher could be retained. Trevor P. Mordecai, A Princeton Theological Seminary student, became the part- time student supply preacher in November, 1916. The congregation's first social event was a reception in honor of Rev. and Mrs. Scofield on February 9, 1916. This information was abstracted from the Church's history compiled in 1965. There are no other references to Rev. Scofield in the history. It was noted that he compiled the “Scofield Reference Bible”. Excerpt from an Article dated June 26, 2005 by Dr. Edwin Gray Hurley: D. L. Moody, the Billy Graham evangelist of the 19th century in America had such an experience. He said, “I cannot describe it. I seldom refer to it. It is almost too sacred an experience to name… I can only say God revealed himself to me, and I had such an experience of love that I had to ask him to stay his hand… I would not now be placed back where I was before that blessed experience, if you should give me all the world.” Peter Marshall, the great World War 2 era Chaplain of the United States Senate, while still a young man in Scotland, was wrestling with God’s call on him to become a preacher. A cousin he had not seen in 19 years came home from America on business and offered to pay for his ship passage to immigrate to the United States. Peter struggled in prayer, finally deciding to come to the United States, and found himself in New Jersey digging ditches, with no clear direction that would lead him toward ministry. He writes, “Then came a letter from Birmingham, Alabama, offering me a position with a newspaper there. I felt, at once, that this might be the second step in my guidance. So I made it a matter of prayer. Should I go South?” Was this the way into the ministry? Within a week I knew it was… I borrowed money, and made my way to Birmingham. There I found friends. I met Dr. Trevor Mordecai of the First Presbyterian Church, (of Birmingham), to whom I owe more than I shall ever be able to repay… Within the space of a few short weeks, I had joined the First Presbyterian Church, had been recommended by the Session as a candidate for the gospel ministry, had spoken at prayer meeting, had been elected president of the young people’s league, had become interested in the Boy Scouts of that church, and had been asked to become the teacher of the Men’s Bible Class. All of this took only a few short weeks… A man walks on through life- with the external call ringing in his ears but with no response stirring in his heart, and then suddenly, without any warning, the Spirit taps him on the shoulder". (Peter Marshall, Mr. Jones Meets the Master, “The Tap On the Shoulder”, p. 26-28.) Rev. Dr. Cyrus Ingerson Scofield By Joseph Hellmann January 20, 2002 A plaque in the Community Church of Douglaston on the rear interior wall of the sanctuary (epistle side or right side as you face the rear) is dedicated to Cyrus Ingerson Scofield, 1844-1921, with the inscription “a pioneer in the organization of this Church 1915”. On April 18, 1915 eleven men met in a private home for the purpose to organizing a church to serve the spiritual needs of the community's Protestants. Rev. Scoffield was not listed among the eleven. The first service was held on May 2nd of that year at the Douglaston Club with Rev. Ulysses Grant Warren of Brooklyn preaching. By the end of that month the congregation leased a store on Main Ave. north of the train station (now 235th Street). The store was to be the church's home for the next four and a half years, until the temporary church building was completed on the site of the present church building in Sept. 1919. | Mordecai, Trevor Popkin Dr. of Divinity (I3015)
