| 654 | 1722- November 12 - Esther Ball Chinn seems to have had enough of Rawleigh's escapades and files for support for their children. | 656 | 1760 - Letters of Joseph Ball jr. to his sister, the mother of George Washington. This Joseph Ball was the uncle of General Washington. I believe the original letter is in the collection of the Library of Congress but I include it here as transcribed by Ruth Walker. They were apparently saved by David Ball, minister of the Old White Chapel Church, St Mary's Parish from about 1791. He has no known connection to the Balls of Lancaster. I have before me two letters from him, the one addressed to his sister Mary, and the other to his nephew George Washington, from which I take the following passages. The first is to his sister, when her son was thinking of going to sea. It is dated Stratford-by-Bow, 19th of May, 1747: "I understand that you are advised and have some thoughts of putting your son George to sea. I think he had better be put apprentice to a tinker, for a common sailor before the mast has by no means the common liberty of the subject; for they will press him from a ship where he has fifty shillings a month and make him take twenty-three, and cut and slash and use him like a negro, or rather like a dog. And, as to any considerable preferment in the navy, it is not to be expected, as there are always so many gaping for it here who have interest, and he has none. And if he should get to be master of a Virginia ship, (which it is very difficult to do,) a planter that has three or four hundred acres of land and three or four slaves, if he be industrious, may live more comfortably, and leave his family in better bread, than such a master of a ship can. . . . . He must not be too hasty to be rich, but go on gently and with patience, as things will naturally go. This method, without aiming at being a fine gentleman before his time, will carry a man more comfortably and surely through the world than going to sea, unless it be a great chance indeed. I pray God keep you and yours. "Your loving brother, Joseph Ball." To his nephew he writes thus after Braddock's defeat:-- Stratford, 5th of September, 1755. "Good Cousin:--It is a sensible pleasure to me to hear that you have behaved yourself with such a martial spirit, in all your engagements with the French, nigh Ohio. Go on as you have begun, and God prosper you. We have heard of General Braddock's defeat. Everybody blames his rash conduct. Everybody commends the courage of the Virginians and Carolina men, which is very agreeable to me. I desire you, as you may have opportunity, to give me a short account how you proceed. I am your mother's brother. I hope you will not deny my request. I heartily wish you good success, and am Your loving uncle, Joseph Ball" [records of William Meade as transcribed by Ruth Walker] 1800- Burges Ball is a member of the Masons of Williamsburg, VA. He has married into the Chichester family that is also related to Rawleigh Chinn who married Ann Ball (5) Burges Ball of "Travellers' Rest", Spotsylvania Co., and of "Springwood", Loudon, born July 28, 1749, died March 7, 1800; captain in 5th Virginia Regiment, Continental line; taken prisoner at Charleston in 1780. In 1776, he raised, clothes and equipped at his own charge a regiment for the Continental service, married Mary, daughter of John Chichester, 2nd, Frances, daughter of Col. Charles Washington. Information on citation found by Charlotte Carrere and used with permission of Charles Clement Lucas, Jr. Dobbs County North Carolina 1779 Vote It Was Not Easy To Vote in 1779 Kinston Daily Free Press Friday - November 2, 1962, Page 10 "In 1779 the outlook for the success of the American Revolution had grown very dim. This year and the next were to be the darkest hours for the patriots. Kinston, the home town of Governor Richard Caswell, had become the de facto capital of the new State. Here the State's Board of War usually met in secret sessions. Sometimes the Council of State met here. Sessions of the General Assembly, being more a matter of public knowledge, usually were convened at larger and more heavily guarded towns. While the name of the town was changed from Kingston to Kinston by law in 1784, already by 1779 the patriots were calling it Kinston in derision of the King of England from whose title the original name derived. The vote in the general election in 1779 required the highest patriotic conviction. If the Revolutionary cause failed, each of these voters would be marked as among the rankest seditionists. For these were the men of Dobbs County who closest held to heart the pledge of the Declaration of Independence, the pledge of "our sacred honor." This list of Dobbs voters is complete but does not complete her roll of honor, for there were those who were away with the armies in the field and the women whose names do not appear on this list. Still, these are the fathers and brothers and staunch supporters of those who fought, and each of them deserves to be remembered. Even to those whose resolute patriotism stilled all fear of the possibility of danger in defeat, to vote was no easy matter. The voting place was at the old Dobbs County Courthouse erected near Walnut Creek about midway between present LaGrange and Goldsboro. Dobbs County included practically all of the areas now comprised in Lenoir, Greene and Wayne Counties, and it was from these areas that the voters came on horseback to cast the vote of freemen in a ? State. Because of the distances, the polls were open for two days, March 10th and 11th. | 693 | 1860 Census Almond P. O. District, near Louina (now Wadley), Randolph Co., AL. p. 838? #1526: Catherine 65 SC in hh of John J. Culpepper. According to census records, Catherine was born in South Carolina. Her mother, Barbary, was recorded in the 1820 census of Edgefield District, SC and this is where Catherine is believed to have married John Jefferson Culpepper. Barbary Bell died sometime after the 1820 census and before Jan 1826 when "Catharine Culpepper" and her husband, "John J. Culpepper" were listed in a 13 Jan 1826 Edgefield District, SC deed with Wm. Bell, Robert Bell, Margaret Bell and Mary Bell as heirs of Barbary Bell. The land mentioned in the deed was on Cuffeeton Creek by Josiah Langley's Mill bounding Elijah Harding, Benjamin Hasting and Geo. McDuffie's land, and had originally been granted to Geo. Shelnut and was very close if not adjacent to the land that John Culpepper, Senior sold in 1823. The heirs of Barbary Bell granted the land to Wm. H. Buffington for $651. Hugh Mosely and Henry Shelnut were witnesses and releases were signed by Catherine Culpepper wife of John J. Culpepper and Mary Ann Bell wife of William Bell on 13 Jan 1826. The deed was recorded 22 Nov 1830. Catherine and John J. Culpepper presumably returned from Georgia to settle the estate since based on 1827 Georgia Land Lottery records, John J. Culpepper, was supposed to have been in Georgia since 1824. Catherine was recorded with her husband and children in the 1830 census of Upson Co., GA and the 1840 and 1850 Chambers Co., AL census. And Catherine was noted in the 1860 census of Almond P. O. District, near Louina (now Wadley), Randolph Co., AL with her husband and grandson. She was not noted in the 1870 census and is presumed to have died in the interim in Randolph Co., AL. John William Culpepper wrote 18 Aug 1994 that a descendant, Mrs. John (Edith Champion) Zuber, said that Catherine was buried with her husband in the Concord Baptist Church Cemetery. The grave was not recorded in the index of church cemetery records possibly because the grave was unmarked or is too worn to read. | Bell, Catherine (I2965)
