Alexander, John Hobson (I9944)

878 29 Apr 1856 Dan Alexander, in his confirmation of the marriage of Dr. Evan and Susanna, and identity of the children, in application for Evan's Revolutionary War pension:
"declares that Susanna Shelby was married to Evan Shelby in 1776 or 1777, from the best information that can now be obtained, there being no family record, and no marriage bond on file in the County Court Clerk's office where such bonds are kept, But affiant [Daniel Alexander] is well satisfied from his own age compared with the ages of Even and Susanna's oldest children, that the said Marriage must have taken place early in the Revolution, their oldest child, if living, would be several years older than affiant,".
Daniel [the affiant] goes on to say "That Evan Shelby died on or about the day of April 1825, leaving his widow, Susanna Shelby surviving, who continued his widow until the day of June A.D. 1837, when she also died leaving affiant's wife [Daniel's wife, Susanna J. Shelby] (since dead) and that Thomas Shelby, Harriet Alexander, Isabella Alexander, Sarah Alexander, Mary Alexander and Milton Shelby as the only surviving children of the aforesaid Evan and Susanna Shelby, all of which will more fully appear by reference...".

Description
DAR# A102413; Pension#: R9471V - surgeon in South Carolina Militia voluntary cavalry in CPT William Alexander's Company, COL Wade Hampton's Regiment, BG Thomas Sumter's Brigade

This Evan, not to be confused with the other Evans, was also a
Patriot. He was in Sumpters Brigade during the Revolution. An
application (R 9471) for Pension Benefits on behalf of the children of
Evan Shelby was made by Dan Alexander, but never carried to
completion. This was filed on April 29, 1856 in Mecklenburg County and
describes his participation in the Revolution."

(From: Rootsweb - Ancestry.com - Biographies)
Evan served in Sumter’s Brigade during The Revolution, probably as a surgeon. An application for Pension Benefits on behalf of the children of Evan Shelby was made by Dan Alexander but never carried to completion. This was filed on April 29, 1856 in Mecklenburg County and describes Evan’s participation in the Revolution. Sumter’s Brigade began when a British party of exiles from South Carolina fled into North Carolina as the British advanced. They chose Colonel Thomas Sumter (left) to be their leader and he took the field against the victorious British at a time when the inhabitants had generally abandoned the idea of independence. Often working with Francis Marion’s men, Sumter’s Brigade were woodsmen of the frontier upcountry. Neither North nor South Carolina was in a position to pay, clothe, or feed troops so Sumter's men furnished their own horses and brought along their own muskets and rifles. Often "iron tools of neighboring farms were worked up by blacksmiths into rude weapons … bullets were made by melting pewter … furnished by housekeepers.” General Sumter was so daring and fearless he earned the nickname "The Gamecock".

In the Mecklenburg Co., NC Court of Common Pleas and Quarter Sessions
Book 1, page 21, 1783 April Sessions is stated "James Burns vs Saml.
Patton - Caveat, Jury impanelled & Sworn Viz: 1. William McCree, 2.

100 acres of Land which he caveated not to take any part of Pattons
clear Land. An appeal granted to the Superior Court.

1790 Census for Mecklenburg Co., NC: Evan Shelby is listed with 2
males and 6 females.
(Evan and Susannah, and six children, who would be William Alexander, Isabella, Sarah, Susannah, Dorcus and Mary. Mary supposedly was born in 1791, however,
it is possible the census was done following her birth).

1800 Census for Mecklenburg Co., NC: Evan Shelby is listed with 4
males and 5 females.
(Evan and Susannah, and seven children, who would probably be Sarah,
Susannah, Dorcus, Mary, Moses, William, and Thomas.

1810 Census for Mecklenburg Co., NC: Evan Shelby is listed with 4
males and 4 females.
Evan and Susannah, and six children, who would be William, Thomas,
John, Dorcus, Mary and Harriet. Isabella, Sarah, Susannah and Moses
are already married and living away from home).

In the pension application, of 29 Apr 1856, children listed were:
Thomas, Harriet, Isabella, Sarah, Mary and Milton and wife of Dan
Alexander (Susannah)...Seven Children. Three children, Isabella,
Moses and William had all died by this time. Five daughters married
Alexander's, descendents of Elias Sr. and 2nd wife, Mary Taylor.

In her book "A Chronology of Moses and Isabel Shelby", Johnnie gives
ten children as: 1) Isabella (m. Stephen Winslow Alexander 22 Nov
1797), 2) Sarah "Sallie" (married John Alexander 15 Aug 1798), 3)
Susannah (married Daniel Alexander 11 Jul 1800), 4) Moses (married bef
1810 Census to Mary Ann Knox), 5) William A., 6) Dorcus (married
William Alexander Kerr 19 Feb 1807), 7) Mary (married William Taylor
Alexander c. 1812), 8) Thomas (married Matilda McDonald 2 Sep 1820),
9) Harriet (married Allison Diannica Alexander 17 Dec 1823), and 10)
John Milton (married Amanda F. Rudisill c. 1833). All were married in
Mecklenburg Co. I tried to get a copy of Moses and Mary Ann's
marriage license/certificate in Mecklenburg and Cabarras Co's, but
there was nothing. Some of the information came, I think, from the
Alexander Notebooks. Two of the listed children are a bit skimpy in
terms of evidence... Moses being one of them. William being the
other.

Moses "Shelvey" is shown on Roll 42, Book 1, Pg 100 in the Mecklenburg
Co. Census of 1810:
(bet 16-26) with 3 boys under 10 (Winfield, Smith &
J. Rufus maybe), and one female (bet 16-26).

Moses was also found in the Mecklenburg Co., NC Census of 1820
Moses not found in the 1830. Mary Ann "Shelvey" was shown as widow in 1830, and 1840.

Dr. Evan Shelby's father was Moses Shelby. It would make sense that his 1st son would be named Moses.

The brother of Moses, father of Dr. Evan Shelby, was Brig. Gen. Evan Shelby, whose son, Isaac, was the 1st and 5rd Governor of Kentucky.

In Moses' Will of 2 Jan 1776, his son, Evan, is willed "Land on
Caldwell Creek, which I bought from Patrick Gibson". and "I Will and
bequeath to my beloved son, Moses, the plantation on Mile Branch on
the Waggon Road and all the money that is due me from James Ross."
(Moses was probably in process of being paid, over a number of years,
by James Ross for the Beaverdam property)

In Mecklenburg, NC Grantor Index Book 12, page 211: Apr 1783, Evan
and Susannah deed to James Ross 227 acres on Beaver Dam Creek off of
Rocky River.
(the same property that Moses sold to James Ross was now
paid in full and the deed was tranferred to James, and the monies were
Willed to Moses son, Evan).

It is most probable that Evan is buried in the Hopewell Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Huntersville, NC (6 miles outside of Charlotte). It is also possible that Evan Shelby is buried there.

Often "iron tools of neighboring farms were worked up by blacksmiths into rude weapons … bullets were made by melting pewter … furnished by housekeepers.” General Sumter was so daring and fearless he earned the nickname "The Gamecock."

Evan Shelby died in North Carolina about 1813. According to legends that have passed down through the John Springs family (another branch of Evan and Susan’s descendants), Susan Shelby was left a widow, with a large family of children, who remembered hearing their mother tell of hardships and bitter experiences. She was often annoyed by Indians, Tories and British soldiers and often would go miles with her children to some place of safety, carrying the smaller children on her blind horse, "Old Ball." She never left North Carolina, and spent her last days with her daughter, Harriet.

Children of Evan Shelby and Susannah Alexander were:
1. Sarah Shelby was born 1778 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina and died 1856 in Big Creek, Shelby County, Tennessee. She married John Alexander on 15 Aug 1798 in Mecklenburg County. He was born 28 Dec 1772 in Black Mountain, Buncombe County, North Carolina and died in 1850 also in Big Creek, Shelby County, Tennessee. John and Sarah Alexander had five known children: Sarah, James Alfred, Mary Mahala, Moses Burton and Shelby.
2. Susanna Shelby was born in 1783 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina and died 01 Mar 1853 in Davidson, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. She married Daniel Alexander 11 Jun 1800 in Mecklenburg County. He was born 10 Jan 1781 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina and died 17 Jul 1862 in Davidson, Mecklenburg County. Daniel and Susanna Alexander had ten children: Daniel, Marcus Sherman, Susanna J., William Franklin, Mary Cornelia, Margaret Anabella, Isabella P, Martha J., and Charles C.
3. Moses Shelby was born in 1784 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, and died about 1826 also in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He married Mary Ann Knox before 1810 at Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, Mint Hill Station, Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Alison Knox and Mary Smith. She was born 28 May 1785 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, and died 27 May 1855 in Selma, Dallas County, Alabama. Moses is the subject of the next generation.
4. William Alexander Shelby was born in 1786 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina and died in 1856 in Cuba, Shelby County, Tennessee. 881 According to Ned Landsman (1985), New Jersey was also a popular destination for Scots, but not predominantly Highland Scots. What Landsman's title (Scotland and Its First American Colony) downplays is that large numbers of Scots were transported to South Carolina earlier in the 1600s and failed to create a successful colony there. Additionally, communities of Scots-Irish settled on the coast of Maryland as early as 1649, and in Darien, Georgia, another less-known Highlander colony briefly flourished from 1735 to 1748. For information on the Darien settlement see Anthony Parker's Scottish Highlanders in Colonial Georgia (1997).

William Foote records an earlier 1729 settlement in his 1846 Sketches of North Carolina. Several subsequent works on the Highland Scots and the Scots-Irish repeat his claims. Meyer suggests that, having visited the Highlander settlements, Foote perhaps recorded surviving oral tradition about the early settlements (1961:177), or perhaps Foote had access to documents that are now lost to us.
Argyll, archaically Argyle (Earra-Ghàidheal, is a region of western Scotland corresponding with most of the part of ancient Dál Riata that was located on the island of Great Britain, and in a historical context can be used to mean the entire western coast between the Mull of Kintyre and Cape Wrath. Argyll was also a medieval Bishopric with its cathedral at Lismore, as well as an early modern Earldom and Duchy, the Duchy of Argyll. (Source: Wikepedia)

Campbell, Joe (Joel?) (Henry?) (I1685)

882 Adam Alexander 23 Sept 1728 – 13 Sept 1798:
Adam Alexander was one of the original signers of the Meckenburg Declaration of Independence.
He, like most of the men reported to be signers, was of Scotch-Irish ancestry. His family was from Ulster, Ireland, and they are interrelated to many of the Alexanders in Mecklenburg County. He spent his early years in Maryland, where he was born, and Pennsylvania. Adams’ father, William, was a captain. Adam was a colonel and served in the Clear Creek militia, along with Charles Polk and James Harris.
Mary Shelby of Frederick County, Maryland, became his wife on 8/4/1752. Mary’s parents owned a large tract of land near Hagerstown, Maryland. Her brother was Gen. Evan Shelby, an officer in the French and Indian War. Her nephew was Col. Isaac Shelby, a hero of King’s Mountain, who later became governor of Kentucky. Adam and his brother, Charles, were both officers in the Revolutionary War and reportedly signed the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. They are also related to the two other Alexanders who are considered signers. He settled in the Clear Creek area of Mecklenburg County and had a Presbyterian minister visit in his home there on Sunday, 10/12/1775.
Adam served as a delegate to the Catawba Indians. He owned a store and a mill, as well as a home in another location. Justice of the Peace, member of the Mecklenburg County Court and Elder of Clear Creek Presbyterian Church were just some of the titles given him during his lifetime.
Although he had no will, when his property was evaluated at the time of his death, he had more than 30 books, a large collection for this time period.
When the debate began over whether the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence existed, his son, Isaac, who was 19 years old in 1775, certified to the State Legislature team investigating the document that he was present in Charlotte on May 19th and 20th, 1775, and that the men known as the “signers” met to take action and withdraw their allegiance from the King of Great Britain.
(Source: Lives and Times of the 27 Signers of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence of May 20, 1775, by Victor C. King, Charlotte, NC, 1956.

Adam Alexander, son of William and Agnes Alexander, grandson of Elias and Sophia Alexander and great-grandson of Joseph Alexander of Cecil County, was born in Somerset County, Maryland, September 23, 1728. He died in the Clear Creek Section of Mecklenburg, November 13, 1798. On August 4, 1752, he was married to Mary Shelby (daughter of Evan and Catherine Davies Shelby), who was born on August 8, 1735, and died in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, November 26, 1813. Both are buried in the old Rock Springs graveyard near which was the first building of Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, where the congregation of that church worshiped before the Revolution and where Adam Alexander was one of the first elders.

Adam Alexander was a large landowner, a man of influence in the County, a churchman, patriot, and soldier. He was a Justice of the Peace and a member of the County Court, being known as "Justice Alexander" as early as 1755. In 1756 he was a Captain of a Company of Militia and took a prominent part in a conference concerning Indian Raids.

He was a Signer of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence on May 20, 1775, and thereafter was a brave and energetic military officer -- Lieutenant-Colonel of Minute Men in 1775 and Colonel in 1776. He took part in almost every campaign in which the men of Mecklenburg opposed the enemies.

Adam Alexander died intestate. His wife, Mary, in her will dated Feb. 8, 1810, mentions "my five children" but names only one of them, Isaac, whom she appointed Executor of her estate. From available records we know that the children of Adam and Mary Shelby Alexander were:

1. Isaac S., b. 6/7/1756; d. 9/2/1823; m. Ruth Reece, b. 1753, d. 10/26/1825.
2. Catherine, b. 1759; m. before 7/31/1779, John McCoy, b. 1753.
3. Sarah Shelby, b. ---; d. 10/11/1842; m. 1777, Capt. John Springs, b. 10/27/1751; d. 6/25/1818.
4. Charles Taylor (Administrator of his father's estate), b. 8/9/1764; d. 8/26/1828; m. 12/28/1796, Margaret Means b. 12/30/1777; d. 7/17/1845.
5. Evan Shelby, b. 1767; d. 10/28/1809; unmarried.
6. Mary ("Polly"), d. 8/19/1838; m. Dr. Cunningham Harris, b. 8/31/1768; d. 1/10/1814.
Note: These children of Adam and Mary Alexander may not be listed in the order of their birth.

Sources: --Mecklenburg, the Life and Times of a Proud People by Howard and Ruth White
states "Adam and Charles were sons of Elias and Sophia's son, William Alexander, born Somerset, Md. d. 1772 Meck. co NC, married Agnes Alexander his cousin. Their first child was Col. Adam Alexander, signer, b. 23 Sept. 1728 Somerset Md., d. 13 Nov 1798, buried Old Rock Springs Burying Ground. m. 4 Aug 1752 Mary Shelby, dau of Evan Shelby and Catherine Davies. Adam was an elder at Philidelphia Pres. Church and a Col. of Minute Men 1775-6. Another son was Charles Alexander, Signer m. Jean---. Served under Cols. Polk and Adam Alexander---was a militia man until 1785. He also had sons named Adam and Charles Alexander--also sons George, Abdon and daus. Margaret, Casandra and Jane."

"My Great Grandmother was Margaret Alexander. I have a very poor copy
of a Daughters of the American Revolution Certificate of Membership
dated January 9, 1908. Margaret married Edward Oscar McCreight born
1849, died 1905. From my grandmother's trunk I have an original issue
of a 1931 Charlotte Observer that describes the Alexanders of
Mecklenburg and the history of the declaration, ca. half of the front
page. I also have an original copy of a short history of the
declaration from the early part of the century (do not have the date
in my head). My Uncle in North Carolina has a self portrate of an
Alexander dressed in the clothing of the 1700s or early 1800s.
These documents have a lot of information, but few dates and
connections. The following is a summary of what they say about the
Alexanders: 'William Alexander 1580 was Secretary of State of
Scotland and later Nova Scotia (including Canada and the northern part
of the USA).' (It does not say he is connected to the North Carolina
Alexanders)
Between 1610 and 1688 Alexanders went from Scotland to northern
Ireland as part of an English plan to settle protestants in Ireland.
They were very successful, but taxes and bad government administration
forced seven Alexander brothers to immigrate to America. They landed
on Manhattan Island and made their way to Maryland. Some later went to
North Carolina in 1750. Among these was Abraham Alexander born in
Cecil County Maryland, 1717, died 23 April 1786, his wife Dorcas, his
brothers Adam, Charles and Ezra and his cousins Hezekiah and John
McKnitt.
Abraham's children were: Elizabeth, Cyrus, Abraham, Nathaniel, Ezra,
Isaac (a surgeon), Marcus and Joab. Elizabeth married John Cambell
and Isaac married two Cambell sisters.
Julius M Johnson married Margaret Moore Alexander, but I am not sure
where Margaret comes form. They had 4 children Margaret Alexander
Johnson, Sarah, Virginia and John.
Cyrus left 5 children.
The newspaper mentioned some Alexanders were alive in 1931 when the
article was written.
The history of the declaration is said to be as follows:
'The Alexanders left Ireland because of bad tax and administrative
policy and then found themselves in the same boat in North Carolina.
The Alexanders decided to petition the king on two grievances: 1)
They wanted their own church officials to marry them, not a British
bureaucrat; and, 2) they wanted to found their own university. To
soften up the king they named the County Seat Charlotte and the County
Mecklenburg because the king had just married Charlotte of Mecklenburg
(Northern Germany on the Baltic Sea). The king rejected the petition
out of hand. This was just another blow in a long list of grievances
that infuriated them. They wrote the Mecklenburg Declaration of
Independence one year before the Thomas Jefferson declaration. All of
the Alexanders signed it, in fact almost everyone in the county. It
was taken and presented to the Continental Congress, which declared it
premature. Later the Thomas Jefferson declaration used some of its
wording.'
What surprised me is it was written in German, although they were
Scots and spoke English.
I find this a fascinating story and would like to know the connection
between my great grandmother Margaret and Abraham as well as the
ancestors of Abraham. I would also like to find a copy of the text of
the declaration...

William McCreight

Robert Jefferson Culpepper was known to his great-grandchildren as
"Great Grandpa Jeff" or "Ole E Pa." His parents were recorded in the
1830 census of Upson Co., GA and this is where Robert is presumed to
have been born. The 1900 Soundex for Alabama shows Robert J. Culpepper
in Albertville, Marshall Co, AL with a birth date of July 1828 but
since he was not noted in the 1830 census this can probably be
discounted. By 1840, Robert had moved with his parents to Chambers
Co., AL where he was noted as one of two males 5 to 10 years of age in
the household of John J. Culpepper. Robert emerges in Chambers Co., AL
marriage records in 1848 and by 1850 was listed with his wife in the
1850 Chambers Co., AL census living next door to his sister and near
his parents.

Robert J. and Louraney (Cardwell) Culpepper hosted the wedding of his
younger brother, William Washington Culpepper, and her younger sister,
Ferby Cardwell, at their home 23 Dec 1855. Their father, John
Jefferson Culpepper, was the second bondsman. At some point after
this, Robert J. Culpepper apparently moved his family to Randolph Co.,
AL. He is noted in land records as purchasing 39.86 ½ acres in the SE
1/4 of NE 1/4 of section 3 in Township 22 Range 10 of Randolph Co.,
AL. Unfortunately, the date is illegible. The land appears to be just
north of the 159.46 acres of land which Robert's father, John J.
Culpepper, obtained 22 Aug 1850. Robert and his brother, William, and
their parents were noted living next to each other in the 1860 census
of Almond P. O. District, Randolph Co., AL.

When the Civil War began, Robert enlisted in the Confederate Army.

After the war, Robert returned home and he was noted with his wife and
children in the 1870 census of the Louina P. O. District (now Wadley),
Randolph Co., AL. His brother, William Washington Culpepper, was still
living next door and his parents were also living nearby, all
apparently on the same land that they were on before the war. By 1880,
Robert had apparently moved his family to Clay Co., AL R. J. Culpepper
was noted with his wife and younger children in Wesobulga District,
Clay Co., AL in 1880 census records.

According to an article from the Guntersville Advertiser 10 Oct 1916,
Robert J. Culpepper and his wife had moved to the Sand Mountain area
of Marshall Co., AL 28 years previously. This would have been
approximately 1888. A son, John James Culpepper, located his family in
what is known today as Albertville, Marshall Co., AL.. Other members
of the extended family settled across the county line in Joppa,
Cullman Co., AL. Unfortunately, the 1890 U. S. census burned and so it
is not possible to see exactly how everyone was situated at the time.
What is known is that, according to her obituary, Mrs. R. J. (Louraney
Cardwell) Culpepper died in Joppa, Cullman Co., AL in 1894. After the
death of his wife, Robert apparently split his time at the residences
of his children. Robert J. Culpepper was noted in Albertville,
Marshall Co, AL in the 1900 census. He was listed as having been born
Jul 1828 although, since he was not noted in the 1830 census and was
listed in later census records as being age 19, 30, 40 and 49, the
1828 reference can be discounted. Robert Jefferson Culpepper's
daughter, Arkansas (Culpepper) Williams, and her two young sons,
"Larkis" and "Charlie," were living with him. In 1910, Robert was
still living in Marshall Co., AL was noted in the Marshall Co., AL
census living with his son, John J. Culpepper. A great-granddaughter,
Mary Lillian Butler Pierce, wrote, 19 Jan 1979: He carved & made fancy
furniture, beautiful beds among other things. He had a collection of
old guns.... He had a hobby of keeping a diary, of the weather and
happenings of the day.... My Grandpa Jack [John James Culpepper] &
family along with Ole E Pa & family all moved here to Sand Mt. from
Randolph or Clay [the family was in Clay Co., AL in the 1880 census]
in covered wagons in 1883.... Ole E Pa Jeff... walked lots of miles
almost every day, even in his 80's.... One more thing about Ole E Pa
Jeff, he carved and made spinning wheels to spin yarn then weave it
into yarn for cloth in those days."

Mary Lillian Butler Pierce added in s 23 Apr 1993 letter that "Robert
Jefferson Culpepper carved and made furniture in his younger days -
beautiful pieces - and each piece painted black." 20 Jan 1979, Mary
Lillian wrote that her great-grandfather had lived with her
grandparents in the same house that she is living in now: Lola Martin
said Ole E Pa Jeff's room was upstairs, steps are steep here and only
heat he had up there & light was a lantern. Scratches are still on the
wall up there where he would strike a match to light the kerosene
lantern. Was a stacked chimney in the middle of the house, heat from
it helped keep the walls of that little room warm. Said he never had a
cold or was sick in winter.

Mary Lillian Butler Pierce added in a 23 Apr 1993 letter: Lola Martin
was right stairs were steep, and still are. Scratches are still on the
wall. I painted or painted part of that little room up stairs a few
yrs ago, and it's hard to find the scratches now.

According to a great-granddaughter, Mary Lillian Butler Pierce, Robert
Jefferson Culpepper received a monthly pension of $15.00 from the
State of Alabama for his Civil War service. In a 3 Sep 1994 phone
conversation, Mary Lillian noted that her great-grandfather would buy
a gallon of "white whiskey" with 15 cents from his Confederate Pension
money and add a teaspoon of it to his breakfast coffee "instead of
cream" to make "Lace Coffee." The following is from the 10 Oct 1916
issue of the Guntersville Advertiser published in Guntersville,
Marshall Co, AL: R.J. Culpepper is 86 years old and enjoys good health
for a man of his age. He has lived on Sand mountain 28 years [arriving
circa 1888]. Uncle Jeff as he is familiarly called, has 8 living
children, 53 grandchildren, 98 great grandchildren and 3 great great
grandchildren, which is, we believe, getting pretty close to the
record in this county.

Robert Jefferson Culpepper died three years later, apparently while
visiting his grandson, Charlie J. Williams, across the county line in
Joppa, Cullman Co., AL. Two days later, Charlie wrote his
half-brother, Larcus Culpepper who, according to Mary Lillian, was
living in Texas: larcus I am Very Sorry But he had to go Some time and
I guess now was as good time as eny they beried him at Corinth [south
of Joppa, Cullman Co., AL] and then they taking up granma and moved
here [her] up there and Beried her Beside him.... he was awfull Bad
and he died that night about twelve oclock.....

Mary Lillian added in a 18 Jan 1979 letter: Great Grandpa Jeff has a
war emblem by his tomb shaped like a 3 or 4 leaf clover, made of iron
or steel. He had a pocket watch with a chain & watch fob looked like
the iron emblem at his grave. My grandfather [John James Culpepper]
kept it, long as he lived.... Uncle Frank Culpepper [Francis Marion
Culpepper] got it soon as my Grandfather died. I don't know who got it
when Uncle Frank died.... Great Grandpa Jeff... got a war pension of
$15.00 per mo. from Gov. [the State of Alabama].

Most of these children migrated to N. Carolina, together with Elias' 3rd wife, Mary Taylor, during the seventeen fifties, largely to Mecklenburg County. However, it is known that Isaac remained in Penn. and died there in 1793.Two of the sons, Abraham and Ezra, were signers of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, May 20, 1775.
