Marie "Peggie" Campbell Paul and William "Wild Bill" Weightman met and married sometime around 1917. Peggie and her son, Billie Paul, moved into Melrose Castle along with my grandmother, Willie Magers Campbell and her son David Aaron Campbell. My Dad was about 11 years old at the time and the Castle seemed like a magical place to him. It sat on a large estate, with riding stables and horses, and the house was staffed with servants. He said that the main room had a large walk into fireplace, and one wall had a repair patch in the maconry where a canon ball had been shot through it during the Civil War.
My Dad said that Melrose was a boring place for him because there were no other children his age to play with. Billie Paul was only five at the time and he commented that the staff was always busy. He got into major trouble one time for carving his initials in the soft gold of the inlayed table leg, in the dining room. He said he did it out of boredom.
One morning, without saying anything, "Wild Bill" got in his biplane, that was in a field adjacent to the house, and flew off and didn't return. Peggie and my grandmother waited for him to come back for a couple of months. At some point the staff left. At that, Peggie and my grandmother came to the conclusion that he wasn’t going to come back. They took some things from the house, packed up and decided to go to Hollywood, California to be in the movies. (At least that's the story I was told ... Unbelievable!) - Jim Campbell, Son to David Aaron Campbell
