Daniel Crenshaw and Nathaniel Crenshaw, Revolutionary War Patriots at Valley Forge:
Daniel Crenshaw and his brother Nathaniel were drafted Feb. (between 10th and 17th)1778.
Served at Valley Forge under Capt. Nicholas Hobson's County of 6th Virginia Reg., later commanded by Lt. John Bell after Capt. Hobson's resignation.
Daniel Crenshaw also served in 2nd Virginia. Reg. See Bell: The Old Free State, ppl 233 234, also p. 224.From DAR Review:Also Capts. Hockaday, Taliferro, Cols. Gibson, FebigerPatriot # A027732 (Basis for Elaine's DAR initial application)
Daniel was born circa 1760 in Lunenberg County, Virginia, British Colony.1. He was the son of Cornelius Crenshaw and Martitia Winn.
Daniel was married to Nancy Dupree, daughter of Joseph Dupree , II and Nannie Sullivan, circa 1781 in Lunenberg County, Virginia.
He married 2nd to Nancy Jennings, daughter of James Joshua Jennings and Philadelphia Bruce.
Daniel Crenshaw was a Private in the Revolutionary War. Served in a Company designated at various times as Captain Nicholas Hobson's and Captain John Hookaday's Company 6th Virginia Regiment commanded by Colonel John Gibson. He enlisted February 17, 1778 for one year, and was transferred in October 1778 to Captain Benjamin Talisaferro's Company, 2nd Virginia Regiment commanded by Colonel Christain Febiger. He was transferred in November 1778 to Captain John Stoke's Company, same Regimen. He was as Valley Forge as part of Washington's Army Pennsylvania on February 17, 1778. Both Daniel and his brother Nathaniel are listed on the Muster Rolls at Valley Forge and descendants are eligible for membership in the Society of the Descendants of Washington's Army at Valley Forge The brothers also found in the battle of Guilford Court House in North Carolina and Nathaniel was injured in the eye.
The Will dated Wednesday, August 20, 1794 does not jive with his re-appearance in Williamson County, Tennessee. Cannot figure out how to reconcile this with his Rev. War Pension Application facts. Daniel Crenshaw in his will dated 20 Aug 1794, probated 10 Sept 1795 Lunenburg County, Virginia, gave his son Abner Crenshaw 100 acres adjoining Osborne, the Ridge Road and to include the 67 acres purchased of Robert Breedlove (Lun WB 1791-1799, P. 104.
Notes: Daniel Crenshaw TN Franklin, Williamson County / Nancy Crenshaw, widow of. (This is 2nd wife Nancy Jennings) Pension suspended for further proof of service. Born the son of Cornelius & Martisha (Winn) Crenshaw, about 1760 Lunenberg VA - died 15 Sep 1831 Williamson Co TN. Married twice. First to Nancy Dupree in Virginia 1779 (daughter of Joseph Dupree and Nannie Sullivan) and she is credited as being the mother of his children William F., Christaina, Elizabeth, Abner P., and Joseph Dupree Crenshaw. His second wife is documented to be Nancy Jennings also of Lunenberg, Virginia whom he married 2 Jul 1789. Three children are listed on Nancy's widow's application which incidentally was denied because the request for additional proof was not forthcoming. The first is Cornelius born 12 May 1790 and the second born 6 Jul 1792 I have concluded is Eliza (ze or za is legible on the pension review). The third child is Polly Jennings Crenshaw born 25 Oct 1794. Other researchers have found additional children. Another Nathaniel is listed and the review of Nancy's Widow's pension states that in 1848 there is one Nathaniel Crenshaw age forty-four living in Williamson County, Tennessee. It is possible that the 3 children listed are the ones living with her in 1848 in the family home. The other children of Daniel Crenshaw and Nancy Ann Jennings are Josephus Crenshaw, Martha Patsy Crenshaw, Daniel Crenshaw (of which we will later hear much!!), and Chester Crenshaw.
In 181? in Lunenburg County, Virginia, Daniel Crenshaw sold and conveyed certain slaves to Ric ard Herring, who soon after contracted for the purchase of a tract of land from DaJtiel Crenshaw, lying in the same county; but Nancy Crenshaw, the wife of Daniel, refused to relin quish her right of dower; and to induce her to do so, Herring agreed with her and her son, Cornelius Crenshaw, to convey to the latter, in trust for his mother and for her separate use, two of the slaves pre viously purchased from Daniel Crenshaw. The deed was duly executed and recorded in Lunenburg. '
In 1814 Daniel Crenshaw and his wife removed to Tennessee, carry ing the slaves with them; Cornelius, the trustee, continuing to reside in Virginia. In Tennessee; to all appearance, Daniel Crenshaw was the true owner of the slaves, and acquired credit on the faith of the property. He was improvident, for which reason, manifestly, the wife caused the slaves to be secured to herself; and it may be remarked that similar motives have led to many, not to say most, of this description of conveyances in the States where the provisions of the Act of 1785, of Virginia, prevail .
In 1821 Stacy recovered a judgment against Daniel Crenshaw in the county of his residence in Tennessee, by virtue of an execution, founded upon which Anthony, the sheriff, seized upon the slaves; and Cornelius Crenshaw, as his mother's trustee, sued the sheriff in detinue. The circuit court held the deed of trust 'void, by force of the statute of Tennessee (which is very nearly a transcript of that of Virginia), because the deed had not been recorded in Tennessee; a verdict was rendered for the defendant, and the plaintiff prosecuted his writ of error to the Supreme Court, where the judgment was reversed.
The court held that the deed made in Virginia, separating the title
